Astroscale celebrates its 5th year anniversary

Posted May 4th, 2018 Posted in Blog

When Founder and CEO, Nobu Okada, started Astroscale, he had no idea how much attention and support he would get from the space community or the media. It has now been five years since the day when Astroscale was incorporated and it is clear that the support has been overwhelming! On this, the 5th anniversary of this exciting and innovate company, Nobu would like to pass on his thanks to everyone.

“On May 4, 2013 I started Astroscale. At that time it was just me and my dream of creating a safe and sustainable orbital environment for future generations. Many people thought this was an impossible mission but today I look back with humility and gratitude on all of the people who have supported Astroscale over the past five years. We have grown from one person with a vision, to a passionate and talented staff that includes 45 people spread across three offices, and tens of thousands of supporters around the globe. I want to thank you all for your unwavering support.

During my first year with Astroscale, I did not get too much attention. I was basically on my own at that time but I was determined to walk through a dark and potentially long tunnel en route to success. To get through difficult times I always kept a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King in my heart:

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.’”

– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This message encapsulates how I want to live and the message I instill in the Astroscale team. Live and work with passion and we will be successful. As this incredible journey continues, I want to thank you all who strive to make the impossible a reality, and who change the world in the process.

Today, I am thinking much more about Astroscale’s future than its past. I believe space debris removal as a trend and business case will evolve faster in the next five years than it has in the previous sixty. We are nearing the point where a low-cost debris removal solution is inevitable…and Astroscale is striving to be the first to provide that service.

Every job has value. Every job is noble and significant if you do it with the right spirit; the right energy, passion and respect. Keep living and working with passion. Thank you for your incredible support and I am looking for continuing this exciting ride together!

Go Space Sweepers! Go Astroscale.
